My Bio

Dennis Baker - Biography

For me, art is simply the expression of how we interact with the world we live in. This can take many forms throughout one's life. For several years now I've been exploring the concept of personal identity - like much of the art world. It seems to be a global question these days. Immigrants leave their birthplace and struggle with new identities in foreign lands. People born of one sex find they relate better to something else. We all have many responsibilities and maybe we wear many hats over the course of our days and lives. Does our mind contain a single, static identity throughout or do we flow from one to the next? What does "identity" really mean in the context of who we are?

Perhaps we live in a fluid spectrum. In fact, it seems that most of life is contained within a moving sense of 'dynamic' rather than 'static' states. Change is everywhere and even we are not the same from day to day. The process of living and practicing art changes me, helps define who I am becoming as well as the person I was yesterday. I've been working mostly in oil these past 25years. My many art teachers have included the wonderful, Angela Johal, the intense and funny, Leo Cuervo  the amazing and empathetic, David Kassan, the incredibly patient, Juliet Aristedes, and many more, to include my current mentors, Lucas B0noni and Michael Azgour. Each have taught me much about the process of making art.  What could be better? Here’s a short video documentary/conversation with me, made by a local student in 2022: https://youtu.be/riAJM45RvDY
